Are there any regions? response

Re yesterday's question, teacher and blogger Samuel Wood comments:

Interesting question to pose on the day of Ignatieff's comments about Scotland and Quebec. Having just emigrated from the former to the later, I would definitely say 'yes'. Quebec might seem like a special case, but having just watched the Alberta elections, it does not seem to be unique in this insistence.
The concept of region is, of course, elastic and not necessarily the same as province, but then I wonder if there as a sense of regional cohesion held by Quebec and Ontario which is not felt by other areas? Maybe western Ontario feels more akin to eastern Manitoba than it does to it own metropolitan portion, but there I am wandering into purely personal speculation having visited neither.
